Early Life
Maverick Murphy, born Markus James Murphy, was born in Camden, New Jersey on November 12th, 1973. He grew up in an apartment with his mother Cheryl, father David, and younger sister Julia, as well as an orange tabby cat named Chester.
Music Career
In an interview with his parents, they recall him playing acoustic guitar since he could reach the strings, advancing to electric guitar by age eleven. He joined local band Punk Cock & the Lefty Lunatics in 1988, when he was only fifteen years old. The band disbanded in 1993, Maverick having left 2 years earlier.
In 1995, Maverick toured with Gay Racist Skinheads as their usual guitarist was in the hospital. Although he only played for a couple shows, he became very close with the band's members, staying in contact for years after.
In October of 1999, Maverick decided he wanted to start his own band, coming up with the name Disciples. He began to write songs and record demos with vocals and guitar. In early 2001, he asked his friend Dustin Ross about joining the band as the drummer, to which he agreed.
Maverick and Dustin played their first show together at a local venue in March of 2002 with their self-titled debut album. They also played covers of My Chemical Romance's "Cubicles", as well as The Used's "The Taste Of Ink".
One day in February 2003, Maverick and Dustin met a man named Chase Singh at a bar. "He was talkin' about how he was our biggest fan, how he was at our show last week, and he wanted to be our bassist, tellin' us to just give him a chance." said Maverick in an interview. He and Dustin decided to let him play at their show the following night. Chase became an official member of Disciples in April 2003.
Disciples released their second album in August 2006, and their third album in September 2009, before breaking up in December 2010 due to creative differences.
